With over 1,500 yachts competing (that's more than 10,000 sailors), the annual one day Round the Island Race is the yachting world's equivalent of the London Marathon. First raced in 1931, yachts still compete for the Round the Island Race Gold Roman Bowl, the legendary trophy presented by the race's founder Cyril Windeler. Little did he realise what he was starting and today, a huge variety of yachts take part, from maxi-sleds and high performance multi-hulls to small coastal cruisers and sedate old timers. The Round the Island Race is a multitude of races within a race!
